Dedicated to the memory of Eddie O'Hara

This site is a tribute to Eddie O'Hara, who was born in Bootle, Liverpool on October 01, 1937. He is much loved and will always be remembered.

Eddie O’Hara, former Member of Parliament for Knowsley South, has died at the age of 78.

He won the seat in a by-election in 1990 and held it until 2010 when he retired. His seat was considered to be one of the safest in the country. In Parliament he was on the Speaker’s panel of Chairmen overseeing debates in committee including several finance bills and the legislation to ban hunting (he was avowedly anti-hunting) and sat in a large number of all party  groups. As a Parliamentarian, he was also active on the Council of Europe as General Rapporteur for Cultural Heritage and as chairman of the Committee for Technology and Aerospace of the Western European Union.

As a teacher and classicist by background, he had a strong interest in educational matters and Greek cultural heritage. He was a fluent Greek speaker and often spoke at rallies in support of the Greek Cypriot cause. After leaving politics, he devoted himself to one of his life-long passions and became chair of the British Committee for the Restitution of the Parthenon Marbles.

He was born in Bootle, the son of a carter and had fond memories of growing up around working horses. He attended the Liverpool Collegiate School from where he went on to Magdelen College, Oxford and  the University of London gaining an MA in Literae Humaniores.

A keen all round athlete and footballer in his younger days, he remained a loyal LFC supporter all his life.

He taught Latin and Greek at Perse School, Cambridge and Birkenhead School. He was a popular teacher who brought classes to life by translating Beatles lyrics into Latin.

He later became a lecturer at CF Mott college in Knowsley (later Liverpool Polytechnic) where he became involved in local politics. Serving as a local councillor until his selection as Parliamentary candidate on the death of Sean Hughes  MP.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret and his children, Terence and Barry and Helen from his marriage to his first wife, Lillian.
